One method involves using a costly digital temperature probe or an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of the sealing face in one-inch increments. Another, more visual test, is to use heat-sensitive TP-PAPER®. This special formulated Thermal Paper changes color when it comes in contact with heat. You can obtain this visual representation of your heat profile by placing a sheet of TP PAPER® between the heat sealing dies as the dies close. The resulting dark-shaded impression gives you an indication of the heat seal profile. A uniformly shaded area on the paper indicates a uniformly heated die. If some areas are darker or lighter than other areas, it’s time to consider making a change to / or adjusting your sealing dies.
DEFECTIVE
HEAT SEAL
NORMAL HEAT SEAL
TP PAPER® is vital for the proper setup of Heat Sealing Dies and can save thousands of dollars in spoiled packaging. This specialized Thermal Paper tests Food packaging equipment before a bad seal causes wasted product. Thermal Sealing, Seal and Cut Equipment, and can be setup quickly and tested thoroughly. Excessive Die Pressure can be reduced with proper Thermal Sealing setup. TP-PAPER® will be most effective for your Heat Seal Setup and Seal Testing.
Shown below is a simple Packaging Heat Seal Test application using TP-PAPER®. A circular seal and cut die contacts the package with minimum pressure. The thermal sealing pattern on the sheet of TP PAPER® on the left shows a break in the heat seal pattern. After proper heat seal setup ( adjustment of the sealing die ) the thermal sealing pattern of the TP-PAPER® shows on the right indicates a complete circular impression and a proper heat seal setup. Not only does this seal testing help reduce waste, it also reduces excessive pressure wear of misaligned sealing dies.
DEFECTIVE HEAT SEAL PERFECT HEAT SEAL
Testing is best in the Temperature range of 200 - 300 degrees F. (93 C-149 C) Seal impression color ranges from:
Note: Please use extreme caution when working around heated dies. These dies are a burn hazard, as well as a crush hazard.
Make heat testing a routine part of your seal maintenance program.

TIPI
PAPER®
- PO Box 311
- Neenah, WI 54957-0311
- www.tipipaper.com
Note:
this Newly Formulated TIPI PAPER® turns BLACK.
Previous paper turned
Blue/Gray. Temperature response is the same.

This will introduce you to TIPI PAPER®, a Temperature-Pressure sensitive paper that can be of great help to you in the operation of your heat sealing and processing equipment. It is economical, so that it can be used on a routine basis to reduce your packaging waste and improve your package quality. The paper is used to check the sealing heads of your packaging equipment so that you may determine if there is “even” die pressure and sufficient heat for consistent seal. This can be accomplished without breaking the web and interrupting production, and with a minimum loss of time and material. This paper produces a sharp, visual, permanent image of the seal being made under production conditions.
TP-Paper® is quite sensitive. It will not respond unless there is sufficient heat, but then the response is very fast (less than 0.1 second) and the picture of the seal is very crisp and sharp. The impressions below show how the paper responds to the perforated sole plates of two different steam irons.

The white spots are the steam holes where there was no pressure
applied to the paper.
Note the sharp edges of the holes. A cut or nick in a sealing die will show up in the same manner, and
if a sealing die is misaligned, the area of lesser pressure will not be as
dark s the rest of the impression. Note the uneven heat pattern
of the iron on the right. You know where, and how well the die is sealing by the picture on the
paper.
TP-Paper® has a Temperature response of 200º to 300º F (93º to 149º C). At the lower temperatures of the range the paper turns a light gray; the color then increases in intensity to a dark black as the temperature increases, up to the maximum of the range.

TP-Paper® is clean, easy to use, and is provided in packs of convenient sizes so it can be kept on hand at the machines where and when it is needed. The 200º - 300º paper is designed for below normal heat-sealing operations and the “information sheet” suggests methods of using the paper to obtain the best results. For the most effective results, place the paper between the two surfaces, which are to be sealed together.
TP-Paper® comes in Three Sizes, 8-1/2" x 11"sheet, 17" x 22" sheet, and 6.3" x 1000 ft roll. (very limited supply) For larger areas the paper can easily be overlapped. There are one hundred 8 ½ x 11 inch sheets, or twenty-five 17 x 22 inch sheets in a pack. The low cost of the paper permits it to be used on a routine basis, such as once a shift, or in a drying operation once a finished roll. This assures you, the operator, and quality control that the equipment is performing properly.
If
a sealing, drying, odor or adhesion trouble develops, the paper is
invaluable. The operator can determine immediately if the heat-pressure
requirements of the operation are adequate without shutting down the machine
for a pyrometer check. He can
determine if it is the packaging material or the machine that is at fault.
If it is the sealing head that is at fault, the paper can be used to
check the effect of the corrective adjustments as they are made.
The paper provides a check on the entire seal area while a pyrometer
checks only the temperature of the spot where it is placed.
Having a pack of paper at each station where it is to be used will
produce the greatest saving in time and machine waste.
To be used most efficiently, it must be readily available.
Product
Development people and troubleshooters can carry the paper with them.
Leaving some paper with a customer may save a trouble call by
permitting the customer to determine if it is the sealing head or the
packaging material that is producing poor seals.
The
more you use TiPi Paper, the more you will realize the savings in time and
waste.

TIPI PAPER® - INFORMATION DATA SHEET
TIPI
PAPER®
- PO Box 311
- Neenah, WI 54957-0311
- www.tipipaper.com
TIPI
PAPER® is a Temperature – Pressure sensitive paper that shows a crisp,
clean picture of the entire seal area.
The paper turns a light gray color at the low end of the Temperature
range and develops the maximum color at the high end of the Temperature
range. However, it will not
change unless there is pressure, so the picture shows both Temperature and
pressure variations in the seal. For
best results place the paper between the surfaces being sealed.
It is not necessary to break the web; tape the paper to the web
passing through the machine. The
material being sealed will insulate and cushion the TIPI paper from the heat
source as the actual seal in insulated.
VERTICAL
FORM & FILL MACHINES
To check the back seam seal of a vertical form
and fill machine, feed a 2” or 3”wide strip of TIPI PAPER® into the
back seam, between the two layers of film, while the machine is running.
To check the horizontal seams, tape a sheet of TIPI PAPER® to the
forming web.
Center the paper between the edges of the web.
If the TIPI PAPER® is wider than
the “lay-flat” inches of the final package there will be two thickness
of TIPI PAPER®
in the ends of the seal. If
this causes a problem, cut the TIPI PAPER® to the “lay-flat” width of
the final package.
The TIPI PAPER® should be taped all the way across the leading edge. If it jams going between the forming collar and the fill tube, cut the paper at an angle as is done when threading the machine. Position the paper down the web by using the eye spot of the design. If there is no eye spot, use the idler as a “bench mark” to measure where the paper should be placed, to have it in the horizontal seal area.

VACUUM
& FLAT WEB MACHINES
To check these machines, tape TIPI PAPER®
to the formed web, or one of the flat webs just before the top web, or the
second web is sealed. The
object is to get the paper between the surfaces being sealed. The
sheets can be overlapped, if they are too small to cover the entire seal
area. Fasten
down the leading edges with small pieces of tape and run the paper through
the machine so that the second web is sealed to the TIPI PAPER®.
If the TIPI PAPER®
is run through the knives, the alignment of the knives and the seals can be
checked.
TIPI PAPER® responds very quickly, 0.1 seconds or less, depending upon the Temperature and Pressure.

IF TIPI
PAPER® DOES NOT CHANGE COLOR
A
misaligned,
nicked, or dirty die will reduce the Temperature or Pressure and this area
will show up as a white spot, or a lighter colored area in the seal image on
the TIPI PAPER®.
If the material being sealed, seals to the TIPI PAPER® so that the color cannot be observed in the heat seal area, fold the TIPI PAPER® over on itself and it will break apart at the paper/paper interface.
